Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: methoxy- comb. form, penicillin n.
Etymology: < meth- (in methoxy- comb. form) + -icillin (in penicillin n.).
Pharmacology.
A semi-synthetic penicillin that is resistant to the action of staphylococcal penicillinase; 6-(2,6-dimethoxybenzamido) penicillanic acid sodium, C17H19N2O6NaS·H2O. More fully methicillin sodium, sodium methicillin.Methicillin was first marketed under the name celbenin.International Nonproprietary Name (1996): meticillin.
