Etymology: < Irish meadar and Scottish Gaelic meadar wooden vessel or pail, wooden drinking vessel, churn < Early Irish metar , medar < classical Latin metrum vessel or other object used for measuring (see metre n.¹).For a possible earlier example of this word see medreie n. (compare quot. 1825). Quot. 1562 probably represents a separate loan from Scottish Gaelic; later use in Scots is restricted to the south-west. In Manx English (see quot. 1889) perhaps < Manx Gaelic meddyr mug (compare also meddyr lighee rain gauge). T. P. Dolan Dict. Hiberno-English (1998) and D. Ó Muirithe Dict. Anglo-Irish (1996) give the form meadar as headword, although this might represent the self-conscious use of the Irish word in English contexts. Ó Muirithe records the term as still in use in Leinster in the sense ‘drinking vessel’ (compare quot. 1922).
