Etymology: < Middle French, French menstruel menstrual (adjective; c1268 in Old French) and its etymon classical Latin mēnstruālis lasting for a month, liable to menstruate, menstruating, in post-classical Latin also in alchemical use (a1490 in Ripley: compare quot. a1550 at sense A. 2) < mēnstruus (see menstruum n.) + -ālis -al suffix1. With use as noun compare post-classical Latin menstrualia (plural) menstrual discharge (c670 in a British source).
