Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from Russian. Or (ii) formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: Russian men′ševizm ; Menshevist n., -ism suffix.
Etymology: Either < Russian men′ševizm (1906 or earlier) < men′š- (see Menshevik n. and adj.) + -ev- connective element + -izm -ism suffix, or independently < Menshev- (in Menshevist n.) + -ism suffix. Compare French menchévisme (1919).
Now chiefly historical.
