Origin: Formed within English, by derivation; modelled on a German lexical item. Etymons: meta- prefix, -mere comb. form.
Etymology: < meta- prefix + -mere comb. form, after German Metamer (Haeckel Gen. Morphol. der Organismen (1866) I. iv. 312; in sense 2 J. Sachs Vorlesungen über Pflanzen-Physiologie xxix. 586). Compare French métamère (1874 in sense 1).With sense 2 compare metamer n.2 2.
1. Zoology. Each of the similar segments of the body of an animal that exhibits metamerism; a somite.
