Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Menopoma.

Etymology: < scientific Latin Menopoma, genus name (R. Harlan 1825, in Ann. Lyceum Nat. Hist. (N.Y.) 1 270), irregularly < ancient Greek μένειν (see remain v.), which does not form compounds in μενο- in Greek (compare Menobranchus n., menorhynchous adj.) + πῶμα lid (see poma n.¹), so called from the persistence of the external gill slits in the adult.

Zoology. Now rare.

A genus (now usually included in the genus Cryptobranchus) of tailed amphibians of the family Cryptobranchidae, comprising only the North American hellbender; (also menopoma) an amphibian of this genus, a hellbender.
