Origin: A borrowing from Ojibwa. Etymon: Ojibwa mano:mini:.
Etymology: < Ojibwa mano:mini: (18th cent. in form malo:mini: ; compare 17th-cent. (Ottawa) malo:mini: ), lit. ‘person (or people) of wild rice’ < mano:min wild rice (see menomin n.). Compare French Maroumine (1640), Malomenis, plural (1682).The Menominees' name for themselves is omɛ:ʔnomene:w. In form Malominese perhaps remodelled after -ese suffix.
