Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Menobranchus.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Menobranchus, genus name (R. Harlan 1825, in Ann. Lyceum Nat. Hist. (N.Y.) 1 233), irregularly < ancient Greek μένειν (see remain v.), which does not form compounds in μενο- in Greek (compare Menopoma n., menorhynchous adj.) + βράγχια gills (see branchiae n.).
Zoology. Now historical.
A genus (now called Necturus) of tailed amphibians of the family Proteidae, comprising the mud puppy and waterdogs of North America; (also menobranchus) an amphibian of this genus, a mud puppy or waterdog.
