Etymology: < the plural of man n.¹ + kind n. Compare mankind n. N.E.D. (1906) interprets the following as an early instance of this word: ▸ a1387 J. Trevisa tr. R. Higden Polychron. (St. John's Cambr.) (1869) II. 145 He schulde raþer chese hem a kyng..of þe wommen kyn raþer [þan] of þe men kyn [?a1475 anon. tr. male kynde; L. de foemina prosapia quam de masculina]. However, the context and the Latin source make it more likely that this should be interpreted as a phrase with the sense ‘male relatives’.
