Etymology: < Spanish menina lady-in-waiting (16th cent.) and its etymon Portuguese menina girl, lass (13th cent. in form meninha), further etymology uncertain and disputed. Compare French menine (1606), Italian menina (16th cent.), both < Spanish.The corresponding Portuguese masculine form, menino boy, also occurs as a loanword in the text cited in quot. 1787.
