单词 menil
释义

meniladj.n.

Brit. /ˈmɛnᵻl/, U.S. /ˈmɛn(ə)l/
Forms:

α. 1600s menal'd, 1600s meneld, 1600s meneled, 1600s menelled, 1600s menild, 1800s– menald.

β. 1800s– mennal, 1900s– menil.

Origin: Of uncertain origin.
Etymology: Origin uncertain; probably related to meanel n., though the precise relationship between the words is unclear. Perhaps compare also mailed adj. 3a.Earliest in α. forms with final -d , apparently frequently apprehended as a formation in -ed suffix1 or -ed suffix2 (unless originally in fact a formation in -ed suffix2 from the noun represented by the isolated attestation of meanel n.); in β. forms perhaps partly remodelled after adjectives in -al suffix1. N.E.D. (1906) enters this under menald and gives the pronunciation as (me·năld) /ˈmɛnəld/.
Now rare.
Formerly gen.: (of an animal) spotted, speckled, dappled. Now only: spec. (of a deer) having pale fawn fur with white spots (also in extended use). Also as n.: a deer with such colouring.
