Forms: 1800s menzhir (irregular), 1800s– menhir.
Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from French. Or (ii) a borrowing from Breton. Etymons: French menhir; Breton maen-hir.
Etymology: < French menhir (P. J. B. Le Grand d'Aussy 1798) or its etymon Breton maen-hir long stone (compare longstone n. at long adj.1 and n.1 Compounds 4a) < maen stone (cognate with Old Welsh, Welsh maen , Cornish men , meyn , ultimately < the Indo-European base of magni- comb. form) + hir long (see hiraeth n.). The usual Breton word is, however, peulvan peulvan n. Compare Welsh maen hir (1695), Cornish menhir (attested in the place names Menear , Manheirs , etc.). Compare dolmen n.

A tall upright monumental stone of a kind erected in prehistoric times in various parts of Europe, Africa, and Asia; a standing stone.
