Etymology: < metro- comb. form3 + -scope comb. form, in sense 1 after French métroscope (M. Nauche Des Maladies propres aux Femmes (1829) 752, after stéthoscope stethoscope n.). With sense 2, compare earlier metroscopy n. N.E.D. (1906) gives the pronunciation as (mī·trŏskōup) /ˈmiːtrəskəʊp/.
Medicine. Obsolete. rare.
1. An instrument used to listen to fetal heart sounds.

1848 R. Dunglison Med. Lexicon (ed. 7) 542/2 Metroscope, an instrument, invented by M. Nauche, for listening to the sounds of the heart of the fœtus in utero-gestation... The extremity of the instrument—the first notion of which was given to M. Nauche by the stethoscope of Laënnec—is introduced into the vagina and applied against the neck of the uterus.
