Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from Latin. Or (ii) formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: Latin metropolicus ; metropolis n., -ic suffix.
Etymology: Either < post-classical Latin metropolicus (from 10th cent. in British sources), or independently < metropolis n. + -ic suffix. Compare earlier metropolical adj.Post-classical Latin metropolicus is also proposed by Schoell for the transmitted metropoliticus in his edition of the 6th-cent. Leges Novellae, following the variant μητροπολικός in the corresponding Greek text for μητροπολιτικός.
Obsolete.
