Etymology: < metro- comb. form4 + land n.1 3.Coined by the Metropolitan Railway Company (see quot. 1915 at sense 1) in advertising slogans promoting suburban housing developments along the route of their main line out of London.
Chiefly British.
1. The area surrounding a metropolis; spec. the district around London, esp. to the north-west, formerly served by the Metropolitan Railway. In extended use: the people inhabiting such an area.
