Etymology: < Mendoza, the name of a province in western Argentina where the mineral is found + -ite suffix1 (see quot. 1868).
Mineralogy.
The monoclinic form of hydrated sodium aluminium sulphate, NaAl(SO4)2·11H2O, occurring as white translucent crusts and fibrous masses.
