单词 mendation
释义

mendationn.

Origin: Apparently a borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin mendāc- , mendāx , -ation suffix.
Etymology: Apparently < mend- (in classical Latin mendāc-, mendāx: see mendacious adj.) + -ation suffix. N.E.D. (1906) took quot. 1561 to illustrate a sense ‘the granting of papal mandates’, and accordingly derived the word < mendat , variant of mandate n. Alternatively, mendation in this passage could be interpreted as a formation < mend- in Middle French mendier to beg (see mendiant n. and adj.) or its etymon classical Latin mendīcāre (see mendicant n.), with the intended sense ‘begging’. However, neither of these explanations would fit the subsequent examples.
Obsolete. rare.
Lying, falsehood.
