Origin: Formed within English, by clipping or shortening; probably modelled on a Greek lexical item. Etymon: emmenagogue n.
Etymology: Shortened < emmenagogue n., probably after ancient Greek μήν month (see month n.1), although the sense ‘menstrual flow’ is not attested for this word in Greek (compare menses n.). Compare French ménagogue (1793), described by Littré as ‘synonyme peu usité d'émmenagogue’.
Medicine. Obsolete. rare. Apparently only attested in dictionaries or glossaries.
