Etymology: < German Mesit (in sense a: K. F. von Reichenbach 1833, in Neues Jahrb. der Chem. u. Physik 9 177; in sense b: S. Weidmann & E. Schweizer 1838, in Ann. der Physik u. Chem. 43 616) < Hellenistic Greek μεσίτης go-between < μέσος (see meso- comb. form) + -ίτης -ite suffix¹. Compare French mésite in sense b (1868 in Littré). N.E.D. (1906) gives the pronunciation as (mī·səit) /ˈmɪːsaɪt/.

1855 H. Watts tr. L. Gmelin Hand-bk. Chem. IX. 54 According to Berzelius, Reichenbach's mesite is acetate of methyl; in that case, there must be a lighter liquid mixed with it.

1892 New Sydenham Soc. Lexicon Mesita, term given by Reichenbach to acetic ether because it holds a middle place between alcohol and ether.
