Ruiz, with variant readings vandurria , banduria , manduria ), cognate with Old French bandoire , Old French (Picard) mandoire kind of small lute (1258, c1280) < post-classical Latin pandurium (6th cent. in Cassiodorus and St Isidore, but supposed by them to be a wind instrument) < Byzantine Greek πανδοῦριον < Hellenistic Greek πανδοῦρα (see pandora n.²) + -ιον diminutive suffix.
