Etymology: Partly (i) < French bandoura (1845 in the source translated in quot. 1846) and its etymon (ii) Russian bandura, †pandura (early 18th cent.) < Polish bandura , pandora (17th cent.) < Italian bandura , pandora (see bandore n.1 and pandora n.2, and compare pandoura n.), and partly (iii) < Ukrainian bandura (18th cent.; < Polish).Compare an earlier instance in a work by a Polish author, with reference to a string instrument of an uncertain kind in Russian (West Siberian) context:1820 J. Boruwlaski Memoirs iii. 83 They..were so kind as..to favour us with some music upon an instrument of their own, called Bandura, a good deal like the guitar, with which we were much gratified.
Music.
A large Ukrainian stringed instrument resembling an asymmetrical lute with many strings, held vertically and plucked like a zither. Cf. pandoura n.Early forms of the instrument varied in size, shape, and number of strings; the modern asymmetrical bandura appeared in the late 19th century in order to increase the number and range of the strings (with as many as 68 strings on the modern instrument).
