Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Memphīticus.

Etymology: < classical Latin Memphīticus, probably < Memphītēs (see Memphite adj.) + -icus -ic suffix (Hellenistic Greek Μεμϕιτικός is rare in early use).In post-classical Latin Memphiticus is frequently used metonymically with the sense ‘Egyptian’, frequently with negative or pejorative connotation. Compare Old English memfitisc (once, in a glossarial source; < classical Latin Memphīticus).

Of or relating to the ancient Egyptian city of Memphis; = Memphian adj. 1. In later use chiefly: spec. relating to or designating the dialect of Coptic (now generally known as Bohairic) formerly spoken there.
