Origin: Probably of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Probably partly formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: French météoroscope ; meteoro- comb. form, -scope comb. form.
Etymology: < Middle French météoroscope (16th cent.) < Hellenistic Greek μετεωροσκόπιον < ancient Greek μετεωρο- meteoro- comb. form + -σκόπιον -scope comb. form. In sense 2 probably re-formed < meteoro- comb. form + -scope comb. form. Compare Italian †meteoroscopio (a1617). N.E.D. (1906) gives the pronunciation as (mī·tĭˌǫ̆rŏskōu:p) /ˈmiːtɪərəˌskəʊp/.
Astronomy. Obsolete.
