Stress is usually determined by a subsequent element and vowels may be reduced accordingly; see e.g. meteorogram n.
Origin: A borrowing from Greek. Etymons: Greek μετεωρο-, μετέωρος.
Etymology: < ancient Greek μετεωρο-, combining form (see below) of μετέωρος raised, lofty (see meteor n.1).Attested in loans < Greek and in words modelled on Greek from the second half of the 16th cent. (see e.g. meteorology n.), sometimes via French (see e.g. meteoroscope n.) or Latin (see e.g. meteoroscopics n.). English formations are found from the first half of the 18th cent.; see e.g. meteorography n.

Forming nouns denoting objects or activities relating to meteorology, as meteorogram n., meteorograph n., etc. Formerly also used (19th cent.) to form nouns relating to meteors, as meteoroscope n. 2.
