A fallen meteor; a mass or fragment of rock or metal that has reached the surface of the earth (or of another planet or planetary satellite) from space, having failed to burn up completely during its passage through the atmosphere. Also more generally: a meteor; a meteoroid.Meteorites are now classed as stony meteorites (see achondrite n., chondrite n. 2), iron meteorites, and stony–iron meteorites.
