Etymology: < French mesdemoiselles, plural (formed as though each element were a separate word) of mademoiselle mademoiselle n.
With plural agreement. Originally and chiefly in French contexts: a polite title used when referring to two or more unmarried young women simultaneously. Also used as a form of address. Cf. mesdames n. 1.Used both prefixed to names, esp. surnames, and with omission of the names, chiefly as the plural of mademoiselle n. (in sense 1); also used in English contexts as the plural equivalent of miss n.2
