Etymology: < French mesdames, plural (formed as though each element were a separate word) of madame madame n. N.E.D. (1906) gives only the non-naturalized pronunciation (medam) /medam/.
With plural agreement.
1. Originally and chiefly in French contexts: a polite or formal title used when referring to two or more women simultaneously, with omission of their names. Also used as a form of address.The plural of various senses of madame n. and madam n. 1. In English contexts now only with reference to married or mature women of non-English-speaking nationalities, or in formal use.
