Etymology: < French mézail (1635 as mezail ), mesail, mursail (both 1868 in the passage translated in quot. 1869), probably ultimately < classical Latin medius middle (see medium adj.) + Old French -ail , suffix corresponding to classical Latin -āculum (compare attirail n.), with form showing Occitan influence (compare Old Occitan mezailhan of medium size).Middle French maisselle visor (1387, probably < classical Latin maxilla maxilla n.) is probably unrelated. The pronunciation given above represents what might be expected in modern usage, but there is no evidence regarding earlier pronunciation.
