Etymology: < mesacon- (in German Mesaconsäure (J. Gottlieb 1851, in Ann. der Chem. u. Pharm. 77 270) < meso- meso- comb. form + -aconsäure (in Itaconsäure and Citraconsäure ), so called after the intermediate position of this acid between the itaconic and citraconic acids) + -ic suffix. Compare itaconic adj., citraconic adj., and aconic adj. N.E.D. (1906) gives only the pronunciation (mesăkǫ·nik) /mɛsəˈkɒnɪk/.

1. mesaconic acid n. an unsaturated dibasic acid, isomeric with itaconic acid and citraconic acid, which can be obtained by boiling a weak solution of citraconic acid with nitric acid; methylfumaric acid, CH₃C(COOH):CHCOOH.
