Etymology: < French merveilleux (see below), use as noun of merveilleux marvellous adj.Attested in French from 1741 in sense ‘an elegant eccentric’. In later use the word is chiefly applied to the dandies of the period of the Directory (1795–9). Compare merveilleuse n.
