Etymology: < French merveille marvel n.¹ + du of the + jour day (see jour n.¹). The specific use of the phrase as an insect name is apparently of English origin (see quot. 1890).

Either of two European noctuid moths having greyish-green forewings with black and white markings, providing camouflage against lichen-covered bark: the widespread Dichonia aprilina, and (in full scarce merveille du jour) the more local Moma alpium.
