a. An outer garment covering the body from the waist to the ankles, with a separate part for each leg; (originally) a loose-fitting cloth garment of this type worn by men, sometimes over close-fitting breeches or drawers; (now more generally) any of various garments of this type worn by either sex (though traditionally more closely associated with men). Frequently in a pair of trousers.In early use esp. worn by sailors, later by soldiers, and gradually becoming widespread from the beginning of the 19th cent.
