Etymology: < post-classical Latin memento mori, literally ‘remember to die’, i.e. ‘remember death’ or ‘remember that you must die’ (in proverbial use by 1474: see note) < classical Latin mementō , imperative of meminisse to remember (see memento n.) + morī to die (see morient adj.).The Latin phrase is also recorded in early modern English and Scots sources, as in the following examples:1554 D. Lindsay Dialog Experience & Courteour iv. sig. Qviiiv Euery day my Sonne, Memento Mori And watt not quhen, nor quhare yt thow sal wend.1600 T. Nashe Summers Last Will sig. E2 What euer you doe, memento mori: remember to rise betimes in the morning.?1606 S. Rowlands Terrible Battell sig. B2 A Deaths hed seale vpon a great gold ring, And round about Memento Mori wrought. The phrase may have been occasioned by the similar phrase common in medieval writings, memento novissima, i.e. ‘remember the Four Last Things’.
A warning or reminder of the inevitability of death, esp. a skull or other symbolic object. Later sometimes in weakened use: any grim, ominous, or sobering symbol.
