Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Or (ii) formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: Latin membrāneus , -ous suffix; membrane n., -eous suffix.
Etymology: Either < classical Latin membrāneus made of parchment (in post-classical Latin (c400) also resembling or consisting of a membrane; < membrāna membrane n. + -eus : see -eous suffix) + -ous suffix, or < membrane n. + -eous suffix independently of the Latin word, as membrāneus is not common in classical Latin or post-classical Latin.
Of the nature of or resembling a membrane; consisting of membrane; membranous.
