Origin: Probably a borrowing from early Scandinavian.

Etymology: Probably < an early Scandinavian compound < the Germanic base of measles n. + the Germanic base of -ing suffix¹; compare Swedish mässlingen measles, plural of mässling pustule (early 16th cent. as mæssling), Danish mæslinger (plural) measles (16th cent.), and also Icelandic mislingar (plural) measles.It is unlikely that the North Germanic forms and the English word arose independently, and there is no evidence to support the speculation in N.E.D. (1906) s.v. that both Scandinavian and English forms derived from an unattested Middle Low German etymon.
