Etymology: < mell- (in mellitic adj.) + -ate suffix⁴. N.E.D. (1906) gives the English word as from ‘French mellat (Klaproth)’; however, use by Klaproth does not seem to be traceable, and French mellate is apparently earliest recorded in a translation (1818) of Thomson (see quot. 1802).
