Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Melianthus.

Etymology: < scientific Latin Melianthus ( J. Pitton de Tournefort Inst. Rei Herbariæ (1700) I. 430) < ancient Greek μέλι honey (see mell n.²) + ἄνθος flower (see anthos n.). Compare French méliante (1694, Tournefort), mélianthe (1732), mélianthus (1963).

Botany.

A genus of flowering plants, now restricted to certain South African shrubs of the family Melianthaceae (see honey flower n. 2), but formerly apparently interpreted more widely; (also melianthus) a plant of this genus.Valid publication of the genus name: Linnaeus Species Plantarum (1753) II. 639.
