Etymology: < scientific Latin Megatherium, genus name (Cuvier 1796, in Magasin Encycl. i. 310) < mega- mega- comb. form + ancient Greek θηρίον wild animal (see therio- comb. form). Compare French mégathérium (1812 as megatherium in Cuvier).

Palaeontology.

1. A giant ground sloth of the genus Megatherium (family Megatheriidae) or the group including this genus, known from fossil remains in Upper Tertiary deposits chiefly in South America. Also (in form Megatherium): the genus itself.
