Origin: Of multiple origins. A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin Megara , -ian suffix; Latin Megareus , -an suffix.
Etymology: < classical Latin Megara ( < ancient Greek Μέγαρα (neuter plural), the name of a Greek city on the Saronic Gulf) + -ian suffix. In form Megarean probably < classical Latin Megareus, adjective (compare ancient Greek Μεγαρεύς , noun) + -an suffix (compare -ean suffix). Compare also classical Latin Megarēius of or belonging to Megara.With sense B. 2, compare Greek Μεγαρικοὶ κέραμοι Megarian pottery, in scholia (medieval Greek or earlier) on Aristophanes Clouds1205.
