Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French mégamètre.
Etymology: < French mégamètre ( C. F. P. de Charnières Mémoire sur l'observation des longitudes en mer (1767) 6) < méga- mega- comb. form + -mètre -meter comb. form2. Compare earlier micrometer n. N.E.D. (1906) gives the pronunciation as (megæ·mĭtəɹ) /mɛˈɡæmɪtə(r)/.
Obsolete. rare.
An instrument for determining longitude from the position of the stars, esp. one which is analogous to the astronomical micrometer but designed for measuring large, rather than small, angular distances. Cf. micrometer n. 1.
