Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Megalosaurus.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Megalosaurus < megalo- megalo- comb. form + -saurus -saurus comb. form.Megalosaurus was the first dinosaur to be given a scientific name. The word dinosaur itself was not coined until later (see dinosaur n.).
Palaeontology.
A genus of large, carnivorous, bipedal theropod dinosaurs known from Eurasian fossils of the Jurassic and Cretaceous periods; (also megalosaurus) a dinosaur of this genus.Valid publication: see quot. 18241.
