Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Megalonyx.

Etymology: < scientific Latin Megalonyx, genus name (T. Jefferson: see quot. 1796) < ancient Greek μεγαλο- megalo- comb. form + ὄνυξ claw (see onyx n.). Compare French mégalonyx (1803), mégalonix (1812 in Cuvier).

Palaeontology.

A ground sloth of the genus Megalonyx (family Megalonychidae), known from fossil remains found in Pliocene and Pleistocene deposits in North America. Also: the genus itself.
