Etymology: < scientific Latin Megalonychidae, family name (K. A. von Zittel in Handbuch der Palaeontologie IV. (1892) 133; < Megalonych- , taken as stem (after ancient Greek ὄνυχ- , ὄνυξ ) of Megalonyx Megalonyx n. + -idae : see -id suffix³). Compare earlier scientific Latin Megalonycidae (F. Ameghino in Contribución al conocimento de los mamiferos fosiles de la Républica Argentina (1889) I. 665), after French Mégalonycidés (P.
