Etymology: < a first element of uncertain origin (perhaps < meak n. + -ing suffix1, or perhaps a variant of making n.1) + iron n.1; compare making-iron n. at making n.1 Compounds 1.
Shipbuilding. Now rare.
A tool used in removing oakum from seams (see quot. 1867). N.E.D. (1906) also states ‘According to information supplied by Mr. G. Crocker, of H. M. Dockyard, Devonport, the term is now often misapplied to the making-iron’ (making-iron n. at making n.1 Compounds 1).
