1. A tall plant, Filipendula ulmaria (family Rosaceae), found in damp meadows and beside streams, which has pinnate leaves and panicles of creamy-white fragrant flowers, and is native to Eurasia and naturalized in North America; cf. meadsweet n. Also (with distinguishing word): any of several species of Filipendula native to North America.The genus Filipendula was formerly included in the genus Spiraea.
