Etymology: < French midinette (1890 in Le journal amusant 17 May, in a caption to a drawing), blend of midi midday (see Midi n.¹) + dînette light dinner ( < dîner (see dine v.) + -ette -ette suffix), with reference to the short break taken at lunchtime.

A French, esp. a Parisian, shop girl; esp. a milliner's assistant. In extended use: a fashionable but empty-headed young girl.
