Origin: A borrowing from Ojibwa. Etymon: Ojibwa mite:wiwin.
Etymology: < Ojibwa mite:wiwin < mite:wi to be a member of the Midewiwin ( < †mite: Mide n. + -wi to be) + -win, suffix forming nouns.The Ojibwa word is transcribed midewiwin in the modern practical orthography.

Among the Ojibwa and some of their Algonquian and Siouan neighbours: a nativistic ceremonial society and its set of rituals, characterized by demonstrations of the powers of herbs and ritual objects and the recounting of traditional knowledge. Cf. Mide n.
