Origin: A borrowing from Ojibwa. Etymon: Ojibwa mite:.
Etymology: < Ojibwa †mite: member of the Midewiwin society (compare Midewiwin n.) < Proto-Algonquian *mete:wa shaman.If it were still in use, the Ojibwa word would be transcribed mide in the modern practical orthography.

Among the Ojibwa and some of their Algonquian and Siouan neighbours: a member of the Midewiwin society. Also attributive or as adj.: of or relating to the Midewiwin society or its members. Cf. Midewiwin n.
