Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; modelled on an Italian lexical item. Etymons: melo- comb. form, tragedy n.
Etymology: < melo- comb. form + tragedy n., after Italian melotragedia (1811), alteration of earlier tramelogedia (V. Alfieri, a1803, the insertion of melo within tragedia being intended to express the intimate relationship of music and drama in his work). Compare French mélo-tragi-parade (1803).
