Origin: Apparently formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: mellow adj., -phone comb. form.
Etymology: Apparently < mellow adj. + -phone comb. form (compare quot. 1927 at main sense), although compare also melo- comb. form (after which the form melophone is probably remodelled).The name mellophone occurs earlier inscribed as the name of a brass instrument (a ballad horn) probably made before 1881, currently in the collection of the University of Edinburgh.
Music. Chiefly U.S.
Any of various brass instruments resembling the French horn, but with a short tube length making for easier technique and pistons instead of rotary valves, originally intended for use in marching bands; a tenor cor. In U.S. use frequently: spec. = mellophonium n.
